ASILE 2007 Abstract

My research is about the decline of Christian schooling in Indonesia with my field work focus in Solo and Yogya city, Central Java. Traditionally, in these cities the high standard of Christian schools has been recognized by Christians and Muslims alike. From the Suharto era on, there has been a boost in funding for mainly government schools. However, after September eleven, the Western world, understandably, began pouring money into private Islamic schools & Muslim boarding schools. In part the rationale behind this funding was to neutralize the influence of extremist teachings. From my observations such programs have had little effect. Meanwhile, Christian schools suffer a lack on domestic and international funding. They are also constrained by a number of adverse government bills and regulations. The result has been a decline in the quality of teaching in, and number of, Christian schools in Solo and Yogyakarta. More attention towards the needs of Christian and other private schools would allow them to compete fairly in the education market place and provide a healthier more balanced environment.

In this presentation I wish to illustrate how recent government legislation has affected Christian schooling in Solo and Yogya, within a broader discussion on factors contributing to the decline of Christian schooling.
